How to fix PayPal connection issues

Learn how to fix PayPal connection issues in TaxTank, including permissions, browser blocks, profile errors, and steps to reconnect successfully.

Updated today

If your PayPal account won’t connect to TaxTank, it’s usually due to permissions, profile settings, or the connection being blocked during setup.

Work through the fixes below. Most issues can be resolved pretty quickly.

1. Your browser is blocking the connection

Open Banking relies on secure redirects, which can be blocked by your setup.

Common causes:

  • Using Firefox

  • Having a VPN turned on

  • Running ad blockers or privacy extensions

How to fix it:

  • Switch to Google Chrome

  • Turn off VPNs

  • Disable ad blockers temporarily

  • Try again in an incognito window

2. You need to reconnect PayPal

Connections can fail or time out partway through.

How to fix it:

  1. Go to Bank Feeds

  2. Find your PayPal account

  3. Click the three dots (⋯)

  4. Select Disconnect

  5. Wait until it shows as disconnected

  6. Click the three dots again → Reconnect

  7. Follow the prompts and select all accounts

3. PayPal data sharing isn’t enabled

What’s happening:
PayPal hasn’t approved access for Open Banking, so TaxTank can’t retrieve your data.

How to fix it:

  • Log in to PayPal directly

  • Go to Settings > Security > Data & Privacy (or Permissions)

  • Make sure third-party data sharing is enabled

  • If unsure, remove any existing connection and reconnect from TaxTank

4. PayPal login or account mismatch

What’s happening:
You may be logging into the wrong PayPal account or using incorrect details.

How to fix it:

  • Log in to PayPal directly first to confirm your details

  • Make sure you're using the same account when connecting

5. PayPal profile issues (less common but important)

Some connection failures are caused by how your PayPal account is set up.

Work phone number issue

What’s happening:
PayPal may block the connection if your work phone number is the same as your

mobile number.

How to fix it:

  • Log in to PayPal

  • Go to your profile/contact details

  • Either:

    • Remove the work phone number, or

    • Add a different number (it must be unique)

Once updated, try connecting again.

Missing business details

In some cases, PayPal requires additional business profile information.

What to check:

  • Make sure your business email is added and verified

  • Confirm your account is fully set up as a business profile (if applicable)

6. PayPal-side issue or known limitation

Sometimes the issue sits with PayPal or the connection provider.

What to try:

  • Wait a few minutes and try again

  • Fully disconnect and reconnect

  • Contact PayPal support directly, especially if the issue persists and mention Open Banking CDR

7. Still stuck? Here’s what helps us fix it faster

If you’ve tried everything above, we can escalate it for you.

Please send a chat through with:

  • A screenshot of where the connection fails

  • A note on exactly where in the flow you get blocked

  • Your PayPal Merchant ID (for business accounts)

We may need to raise this with our data provider (Basiq). In some cases, PayPal investigations can take time, so it’s also worth contacting PayPal directly at the same time.
