A ticker refers to a unique symbol or abbreviation used to represent a specific publicly traded company's stock on a stock exchange. It helps investors and traders easily identify and track the performance of a particular company's stock, share or ETF in the financial markets. Tickers are typically composed of letters or a combination of letters and numbers, and they serve as a shorthand way to refer to a specific stock during trading and investment activities.

In TaxTank we deliver live market values daily for shares and ETFs traded on multiple exchanges so you will see the company name that relates to the Ticker as well as an abbreviation for the stock exchange so you select the right holdings. For example ticker BHP will display as 'BHP Group Limited (NYSE)' and 'BHP Group Limited (ASX)' in the dropdown to select.

What are the available exchanges?

  • Australia - ASX

  • United States - NYSE

  • Canada - TSX

  • Hong Kong - HKEX

  • Singapore - SGX

  • London - LSE

What about cryptocurrencies?

Similar to shares, a ticker symbol is also a shorthand representation used to identify a particular cryptocurrency. Crypto tickers are typically comprised of a few letters or a combination of letters and numbers that uniquely identify a specific cryptocurrency. These ticker symbols are widely used on cryptocurrency exchanges, price trackers, and other platforms to simplify the identification and trading of different cryptocurrencies. For example, "BTC" is the ticker symbol for Bitcoin, and "ETH" is the ticker symbol for Ethereum.

Why are currencies converted to AUD?

The ATO requires all capital gains and losses to be reported in Australian dollars so when adding stocks, shares or cryptos in Holdings Tank you need to add the BUY price, SELL price and any trading fees in AUD.
