Learn how to import shares and crypto trades in bulk in Holdings Tank to save time and effort.

Updated over 2 months ago

In Holdings Tank you can add any stocks, shares, ETF's and Cryptocurrencies that you own one by one. However, if you have lots the much quicker option is to import them in bulk.

1. How to import trades in bulk

From the Holdings Tank, simply select the 'Import' button to open the pop-up, and then choose the relevant asset type (Shares or Crypto) that you want to import from the top menu. If you're importing both, you'll need to upload them individually. For multiple exchanges, each one will also need to be imported separately. Eg, if you have ASX and NYSE assets, they will need to be imported separately.

Then choose how you own the assets your importing. By default we will select 'Held in my name' which means you own the asset in your name, however select 'Held in other' for any assets bought in a trust, company or SMSF so these trades are excluded from your Tax Summary.

2. How to create your own csv or download the template for importing

If you're exporting trades from another platform you will need to customise the data with the required fields and save as a csv file to import. The required fields are 'ticker', 'buyPrice', 'unitsHeld', 'fee' and 'buyDate'.

When your csv is ready to import simply drop or drag your file and then select the 'Import Bulk' button to confirm. Alternatively, select the 'Download template' button and open our formatted csv to add your trades, save again, and then import.

Its important to note the BUY price and fees should be in Australian dollars (AUD). You can also edit trades to attach a BUY statement after importing.

My csv import wont import, what do I do?

If you cant import check the notification error to troubleshoot the issue. There are two common errors;

  1. Invalid CSV format. If this is the case check the file your trying to import is a csv file, and check the required field names are correct, and the data in the same format as the example above. Once you've made any needed changes try again.

  2. Incorrect ticker. If this is the case we will display the name of the problem ticker in the notification so you can check, make any changes and then import the csv again. If there is more than one incorrect ticker you will see this error again.

I made a error on an imported trade. How do I fix it?

If you make a mistake you can delete or edit any of the information quickly and easily. Just scroll or search to find the ticker you need to fix, and then select the blue triangle to see all BUY for this ticker. Simply find the BUY you with the error, and from the right hand side select the 3 dots, and then either 'Delete' to remove the trader or 'Edit' which will open a popup.

Make any changes you need to make to any of the fields in the pop-up, or attach a new document, and then select the 'Save' button.
